Create your vault

A vault is a folder on your Mac. It holds your notes as Markdown files, plus a small .atomus/ folder with your review history. You can open it in Finder, edit the notes in any editor, and back it up like any other folder.

Pick a folder

On first launch, Atomus asks where to create your vault. Choose a parent folder and Atomus creates an Atomus folder inside it, with a welcome note to get you started.

Already have a folder of Markdown notes, say an Obsidian vault? Pick that folder instead. Atomus uses it as-is and finds the atoms already written in your notes.

You can open another folder as a vault later with File → Open folder as vault…, and manage your vaults in Settings → Vault.

Keeping it in sync

To use the same vault on more than one Mac, turn on Git sync in Settings → Sync. Atomus commits and pushes your notes and review history to a Git remote you choose. See Sync and backup for what syncs and how.

That's all it takes

The vault is just a folder. Nothing about it is locked away. What's inside shows exactly what Atomus keeps there.
